Mentorship Program

Welcome!

Launched jointly by the Canadian Physiotherapy Association and Ontario Physiotherapy Association, the Mentorship Matching Program is available to all CPA members to support reciprocal learning through the sharing of knowledge and experience between individual mentors and mentees.

The concept of mentoring/coaching is the process of partnering experienced members with highly motivated members who have a learning need, and who are seeking guidance or assistance towards achieving a goal. Mentorship relationships can fall along a continuum of informal to formal, with formal mentorship ideally involving established goals, schedules, training and evaluation.

About Mentorship

Mentoring/coaching is the process of partnering experienced CPA members with highly motivated members who have a learning need and seek guidance or assistance towards achieving a goal. Mentorship is a reciprocal learning process involving sharing knowledge and experience between individual mentors and mentees.

Mentorship relationships can fall along a continuum of formality, with formal mentorship ideally involving established goals, schedules, training and evaluation.

CPA Mentorship Program

The CPA Mentorship Program was developed to provide a system that allows mentors and mentees to find each other and connect.

The Mentorship Program comprises three members-only components:

  1. Self-directed learning modules. These modules, for both mentors and mentees, will assist in developing the mentorship relationship, will determine the criteria for an appropriate match, and will explain the steps required for a successful mentorship relationship.
  2. A Mentor Databasefor mentors to register themselves, indicating the areas in which they can mentor and their availability.
  3. A simple Mentor Search Enginefor mentees seeking a mentor. Mentees are able to search the mentor database for an appropriate match. Once a possible match is found, it is up to the mentee to contact the mentor.

Who Can Participate?

CPA’s Mentorship Program is designed for physiotherapists and for physiotherapist assistants/aides working under the supervision of a physiotherapist. The Program is available exclusively to CPA members and can be utilized for short-term issues, e.g., to find an appropriate person to address a clinical question, or for longer-term mentor relationships that may be sustained over weeks or months.

The Program is not designed for student members. Student members of CPA are welcome to use the education modules but are not eligible to enter into a mentorship relationship with another CPA member until they have graduated and are registered to practice in any jurisdiction. If you are a physiotherapy student wishing to find a mentor to assist with your studies, we recommend that you contact your clinical coordinator or other faculty member for guidance.

Evidence supports the effectiveness of mentors through major points of career transitions. Students who are transitioning from the academic setting to their first professional role as a physiotherapist or as a physiotherapist assistant are ideal mentees. It is hoped that new graduates who want to be matched will sign up prior to their transition.

Regulatory Terms & Conditions

Members who are currently involved in a regulatory directed remediation program or who are in the process of completing terms and conditions formally agreed to between the member and the College are not eligible for the Mentorship Matching Program until the College agrees that the terms of the agreement are met.
